I hope these will be useful quite broadly, whether you're a marketing professional or a founder. Starting with this:The TikTok ban - that ended up not being quite a ban but might also become a ban again in a few months - pulled sharply in focus the need to diversify. But not to just diversify for the sake of it. Diversify like you mean it. Diversify with purpose. What does this look like in practice? 1) Set up an email list that's NOT a dumping ground A lot of businesses get this wrong. They see their email list as a place to dump random product information, award wins and launches. No. Treat it as another content outlet where you focus on delivering value first. 2) Analyze platforms There are maybe half a dozen platforms where your audience members give most of their attention. A dozen, tops. Without a huge budget and team, you can't be good on all of them. So, spend some time really understanding where your audience is spending time. Maybe it's three platforms. Decide those are the ones you want to focus on, and go all in. Treat each one as you treat TikTok: as a unique platform that requires a nuanced approach to content and community building. 3) Take action on search One of the main things I'm doing with my clients this year is helping them take action on search. Google Search has changed for good, and should be considered unreliable for organic content. So, are you creating content on social platforms that your ideal audience is actually searching for? If not, you MUST remedy this. Speak to me if you'd like to talk through it. 2025 is the year AI eats up legacy search engine results for good, and we need to understand that social platforms have become our new primary search tools.
